If there were awards for restaurants with authentic vibes, this place would get top prize. There is such a feel of old Cairo about the decor that it’s a little disconcerting. With only lazily twirling wall fans, the ground floor can get a little muggy; the upstairs dining room (with an annex room for smoking shishas) is a lot more comfortable, though less atmospheric. The menu does a good job at covering the usual suspects, including a fabulously smooth babaganoush and earthy feta cheese salad. The mezes are a cheap and filling starter for two to three, while the meshawi – a fragrant plate of smoky, grilled meats and vegetables – is another good sharing option.
