After multiple pop-ups in Singapore, Bakery 1946, also known as Suhyeongdang, has finally opened a permanent outlet on our sunny island. Located in Suntec City Tower 3, the bakery not only sells bread, but also innovative drinks like the blue sky cream latte ($7.90) and black sesame latte (from $7.30). There is also a seating area further inside the bakery for you to enjoy your buns and drinks, making it an ideal spot to chill after strolling around Suntec City (and we all know how big that mall is).
If anyone’s going to Bakery 1946, they’re going for its unique buns shaped like fruits and vegetables. One viral sensation is the K-apple bun, which resembles the actual fruit and is stuffed with cream cheese, apple puree, and apple chunks. We’ve tried it before at Bakery 1946’s previous pop-ups but had to give it another go, and were pleasantly surprised by how well the apple puree and cream cheese blend together to create a sweet but tangy filling. It will have you longing for seconds.
Other standouts include the carrot bread ($3.90) and the whole chestnut bread ($3.90). These look impressively like their namesakes, and have carrot and chestnut fillings that blend savoury and sweet flavours without leaving an overwhelming aftertaste.
We went in fully expecting to love the garlic manju ($3.90). A bun shaped like a clove of garlic, it’s one of the more popular picks next to the K-apple bread. Regrettably, we were not fans. The bread was dense and tough to chew, not helped by the thick consistency of the garlic filling. But garlic lovers are sure to appreciate the garlic manju’s strong flavour, where the garlic is balanced out by the sweet and creamy white bean paste.
Not feeling adventurous? Go for regular bakes like ring donuts ($3.30), Daegu sweet red bean buns ($3.50), and cream cheese buns ($3.60). We enjoyed the black sesame cream cheese bread ($5.50), which was made with sweet, fluffy bread and a generous filling of black sesame and cream cheese, resulting in a decadent afternoon snack that left us wanting more.
Every sweet treat deserves to be paired with a drink, so we opted for the highly recommended iced Ginsengccino ($7.10) and iced mugwort latte ($6.60). The Ginsengccino left a strong first impression, with the ginseng’s herbaceousness hitting you the moment we took a sip. The earthier notes of the espresso and the sharp ginseng taste made for a confusing drinking experience, though we got used to it after a while. On the other hand, the mugwort latte was delicious, with a slight hint of mint to give the latte a more refreshing taste.
Although Bakery 1946’s buns are innovative and one-of-a-kind, with the K-apple bun being the star of the show, the other buns did not leave a lasting impact on us. This makes it difficult to justify the higher-than-average price point, especially since most of the food-shaped buns are palm-sized. However, Bakery 1946’s unique bakes are worth trying at least once, especially since these adorable buns make for the perfect addition to your Instagram feed.
