There’s a new matcha dessert shop in town. You might be wondering: do we really need another cafeé dedicated to Japanese tea? Well, the queue at 108 Matcha Saro says it all. The café draws you in with colourful food replicas placed out front in front, but really, it is the obanyaki (from $2.90) made on the spot wafting through the air that convinces you to get in line. It comes in five different flavours, with a choice between the regular or matcha dough. Skip the plain-tasting custard and get the matcha custard instead. While you’re at it, grab a cup of freshly made warabi mochi ($4.90) – these soft and chewy treats easily melt in the mouth.
Equally popular is the soft serve, which comes in matcha or hojicha. Its intense flavour might overpower the toppings of red bean, mochi, or jelly in the parfait (from $6.90), so best to go simple and have it on a cone ($4.90). And for those who prefer to sip some tea, it is hard to go wrong with the classic matcha latte ($4.90), or mix it up with the matcha with almond milk tofu ($5.90).
