Harkening back to his years in Australia, Singaporean Nelson Yap tails the third wave coffee movement in Singapore with The Assembly Ground, which carves a 64- seat space out of the dandy-man lifestyle shop The Assembly Store in The Cathay. Going after the creative and laid-back vibe found in most Melbourne cafés, the brews here (from $5.50) feature blends by local roasters, such as the slightly acidic and fruity Four Chairs blend by Nylon – which complements the buttery eggs benedict ($15.90) or potted eggs and soldiers ($9.90) – and the fuller-bodied and nutty 22 Martin blend by Common Man Coffee Roasters, which works well with its mushroom fontina egg pizza ($18) or parmesan truffle fries ($8.90) for sharing.
