This 41-year-old Teochew restaurant is one of the last of its kind in Singapore; think fluorescent-lit dining room, bright-pink foldable chairs and faded wood-panelled walls. Occupying three units of shophouses, Lee Kui is also known as Ah Hoi – or crab in Teochew. As the name implies, people flock here for one thing – the famous cold crabs. But if the hefty price tag of about $70 per kg hurts, consider wallet-friendly alternatives from the extensive menu of stir-fries, stews, deep-fried and steamed dishes. We highly recommend the crisp and moist oyster omelette, served with refreshing sprigs of coriander; savoury eight-treasure vegetarian stew that includes melt-in-the-mouth cabbage and moss in a oyster-sauce laced gravy; and the braised duck wings served in a claypot bubbling with a dark and rich brew. Complete your meal on a high note with the sweet and unctuous ambrosia of or nee (yam paste), crowned with gingko nuts and creamy mashed pumpkins.
