After so many years, this self-styled ‘English Rose Café’ still turns out a substantial afternoon tea. But it’s the à la carte menu that holds some nice surprises (inasmuch as English food can surprise) – among them a generous serving of niçoise salad with moist French beans, perfectly done eggs and anchovy strips; fat pork sausages served with crisp bacon and a pile of caramelised onions; and a satisfying round of cottage pie. The French fries are addictively good, while the just-right apple pie sets the standard for this town. A live singer entertains with golden oldies from Wednesday to Saturday nights. What more could you want from a restaurant?
