The opening of the 120-seater Chinese Box gives residents of the uppity Bukit Timah enclave reasons to cheer, offering semi-refined Chinese fare in a restored black-and-white bungalow that’s set deep in the bucolic confines of the NUS law campus (next to the Botanic Gardens). Points go to the restaurant’s heritage (it was opened by the folks behind Tanglin Road’s The Magic of Chongqing Hot Pot and Suntec City Mall’s Chinese Feasts) and its bright orange and red interior. Though variety from the pan-Chinese menu may not raise many eyebrows, pick wisely, for certain star dishes call for repeat visits. We recommend the golden roast duck, silky smooth congee, trio egg and matrimony-vine in superior stock as well as wok hei-infused garlic fried rice and hor fun. Note that congee and noodles are only available at lunch.
