Welcome to Your Daily Dose, a daily column dedicated to what Time Out Singapore's editors are loving right now including food, music, movies, theatre, workouts, and more – all of which you can also experience form the safety and comfort of your home while Singapore's 'circuit breaker' measures are in place till June. Make the most of your home-stay by ticking off the 28-day plan we’ve set up.
Since we're all back on the work-from-home grind tomorrow, let's make every second of today count. Whether you're spending the hours on self-care, or bonding with the kids and/or furkids, there's plenty of cool things in-store (and online) this weekend. But if you're itching for more, we've got your back.
Yesterday, we logged into Fortnite to catch Travis Scott 'live', watched Pangdemonium's play Falling, and checked out the Objectifs Film Library which carries over 40 short films by Southeast Asian filmmakers. Today, we're playing the exclusive single Stay Home by 14 local artists, making (read: trying) our very own bubble tea, and letting our creative juices flow with Studio Mu Yu's DIY craft kits.
Listen to the catchy new single Stay Home
Scroll down the news and you'll find that one rebel breaking the circuit breaker rules. So it has come to a point where us Singaporeans need a further reminder, and what sticks around more than a catchy tune? Universal Music Group has recently released Stay Home, a moving track that delivers the powerful message of strength in unity – all in support of the nationwide efforts to keep everyone safe at home.
The song features 14 local artists from various backgrounds including Charlie Lim, Yung Raja, Fariz Jabba, Shigga Shay, Alif, Abangsapau, Tosh Rock, Iman Fandi, Aisyah Aziz, Shye, Zadon, Yaø, Hashy, and Dee Kosh. Fun fact: the artists recorded the single and filmed the music from their respective humble abodes in a record time of 11 days. Watch the snug music video above.
Inspired by Malaysia's version #JanganKeluar, the single (and collaboration) stays true to the original, but with hints of local elements in its melody and chorus to appeal to the local audience. It also celebrates our diversity with the four different languages of English, Mandarin, Malay, and Tamil. This multilingual tune is definitely one for us Singaporeans, and is available to stream on Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube Music, and KKBox. Here's hoping to more people practising the importance of staying at home.
Make your own bubble tea
If you didn't manage to snag the last DIY bubble tea kit from Liho Tea, don't panic. We've found a solution to satisfy your sugar craving: Bosch Home Appliances' DIY bubble tea recipe. The best bit? You can find all the ingredients at your nearest grocery store. Try the recipe for pearl milk tea below:
Ingredients: boiling water, one cup of tea, one-third cup of brown sugar, one-third cup of tapioca starch, evaporated milk and ice.
Procedure: first, mix one tablespoon of brown sugar with the tapioca starch evenly before pouring in boiling water slowly while mixing until a dough-like consistency is achieved. Then, knead and shape the dough into a thin stick. Cut them into smaller pieces and roll them between your palms into small balls like that of 'pearls'.
In a pot, boil twice as much water as the pearls that you have and dissolve the remaining brown sugar. Add in the pearls and once you see them floating to the top, turn the heat down to medium.
After 15 minutes, remove the pearls from the pot and let them sit for 20 minutes. While waiting for the pearls to cool, make a cup of tea of your choice. Then, add the desired amount of pearls, evaporated milk, and ice to the tea, and voila – you got yourself a homemade cup of bubble tea. You're welcome.
Get arty with Studio Mu Yu's DIY craft kits
During our spare time, we've dabbled in the art of craftwork to enhance our creative skills, as well as to keep us distracted with a brand new project. It's also been said that crafting helps boost our mood and mental wellbeing too. And since we're all staying home, we could all make something stylish for our living spaces too.
Local artisanal woodcraft brand Studio Mu Yu is bringing the #StayHōmu DIY kits to life, starting with a jewellery-themed kit ($48 inclusive of delivery) which is available from today – just in time for Mother's Day. The kit includes the necessary tools and materials required to create and personalise two sets of wooden earrings and necklaces, as well as two embroidered pendants. In a mission to transform one man's trash into another man's treasure, the team at Studio Mu Yu collects small pieces of wood that would otherwise be discarded and converts them into wearable art.
"With the cancellation of trade fairs, events and workshops, these past few months have been really challenging for makers,” says Lyn Ng, founder of Studio Mu Yu. "However, it is our hope that by converting our usual workshops to DIY kits, we are able to keep operating from home and continue sharing the language of wood straight to members of our lovely community. We are so grateful for their support during this time, and hope that Singaporeans will continue supporting local."
Studio Mu Yu is also teaming up with three other local craft brands from April to June to offer more #StayHōmu DIY kits, starting with Craft Atelier and its D.I.Y. cross-stitch design inspired by Peranakan tiles. It allows you to practice your needlework skills while you create a beautiful textured woollen addition to your abode. Doesn't that sound sew good?
If you need the extra guidance, tune in to Studio Mu Yu's Instagram page (@muyu.co) on May 10 where the brand will host a live workshop session for the crafts. This also makes a great bonding sesh for you and your mum (if you live in the same house) on Mother's Day.
