If you are impressed by this year’s Mid-Autumn Festival light-up at Chinatown and wish you could bring home a piece of the magic with you, here’s some good news – you actually can. Similar to the Chinese New Year lantern adoption drive that was held earlier this year, Chinatown Festival Committee is putting up the larger-than-life street lanterns up for grabs, at absolutely no cost at all. This is part of the committee’s sustainability efforts, where these intricate decorations will get a chance to be repurposed instead of simply being discarded.

All types of lanterns as part of the street display are looking for new homes – this includes the rabbit mascots, dividers, hanging pieces, and parts of the centrepiece. Only the centrepiece itself isn’t up for adoption.

You’ll first have to apply online through this form with your details and intention of adoption – even if purely for decorative purposes – along with the specific items you’d like to have for keepsies and its quantity (for example, “one grandmother and 3 rabbits”). There’s even a box where you can upload a photo of your preferred lanterns for clarity of potential allocation.

The deadline for applications is October 2, 2024, and successful applicants will be notified regarding self-collection on October 18.

Lantern adoption is subject to availability and the discretion of the Chinatown Festival Committee, but hey, it wouldn’t hurt to try your luck.
