It seems like SMRT trains have been continuing to find new life even after they have been decommissioned, and we have Land Transport Authority (LTA)’s upcycling project to thank for that. Following the announcement of a decommissioned train being transformed into Singapore’s first co-living train hotel is another exciting initiative by City Developments Limited (CDL) that is set to launch during the period between the end of 2024 to early 2025. This time, another decommissioned SMRT train cabin will be repurposed into a hub for sustainability education and awareness at City Square Mall, marking the first project of its kind.

Titled the CDL EcoTrain, the project aims to educate the public on pressing climate and current day sustainability challenges, with a focus on children aged four and above. Future programmes we can look forward to at the CDL EcoTrain includes interactive displays, exhibits and workshops focused on environmental themes.

In the spirit of sustainability, the CDL EcoTrain runs on zero operational energy, thanks to rooftop solar panels and a clever energy tracking system from Schneider Electric. The exterior of the train is also coated with Gush HydroPro Cool Enamel Paint, an eco-friendly option that reduces heat and the need for air-conditioning. The ramp and flooring are made from recycled rubber, including tennis shoes and balls. The ceiling and signage of the EcoTrain use unistrate panels, made from 100 percent recycled wood fibres without glue. Inside, the train features Nora flooring, made from natural rubber.

This project is also made possible through the collaboration with Just Keep Thinking – Singapore’s largest Science, Nature and Sustainability social media platform boasting a global community of 600,000 followers. Leading the charge is MJ, affectionately known as ‘Biogirl’, who is usually spotted in her signature yellow dress and black specs, complete with her classic opening greeting of “Hey Guys!”.

So what’s first on the programme lineup? It’s none other than an interactive exhibition spotlighting rainforests and its vibrant ecosystems. Visitors can enjoy enriching educational videos, informative LCD displays and a web app gameplay that will enable them to journey through nature virtually. To top it off, there will also be hands-on activities over at the activity corner, and weekly workshops hosted by MJ where you’ll be able to learn more about the importance of rainforest conservation.
