Stamp collectors and architecture buffs can now get their hands on these striking stamps that feature conservation heritage buildings in Singapore.
The six stamps feature buildings designed in the classic Art Deco style, an architectural style which has its roots in Paris from the early 1900s. The style is widely recognised by simple geometric designs on the facade, think clean lines and streamlining of classical motifs such as capitals, arches and keystones. It’s a departure from the art nouveau style of that time. A plaque with the building’s date of construction is also a common feature of such buildings. The style later influenced many parts of the world between the 1930s and 1960s.
The featured conserved buildings on the stamps are the Waterboat House located in the Fullerton area, Maxwell Chambers in Tanjong Pagar, 9 Norris Road in Little India, 36/38 Armenian Street near City Hall, 13 Pahang Street near Kampong Glam and 79 Circular Road near Boat Quay.
“In Singapore, many buildings featuring the Art Deco style were built between the 1930s and 1950s, during a very exciting time in Singapore and bore witness to many social, cultural and technological progress," said SingPost. "Many of these buildings are also subsequently conserved, including the six buildings featured on the stamps.”
Many buildings featuring the Art Deco style were built between the 1930s and 1950s in Singapore and carry great historical value today.
The stamps are valued between $0.30 and $1.50 each. Pre-cancelled First Day Covers ($6.75) and presentation packs ($7.85) are available at all post offices, philatelic stores and online.
