In case you haven't heard the massively good news, The Substation is not closing down after all. Instead, it will be given a new life as an arts company.
This follows an announcement in March, where The Substation Board decided to permanently close The Substation. The decision was collectively made by the board, who believed it was the right thing to do. However, the community felt otherwise and sought an opportunity to drive The Substation forward.
Substation 2.0, as it is called, does not yet have a new home. However, the vision of providing a platform for emerging and independent artists will continue. The board aims to continue to serve the vision and dream that started at 45 Armenian Street. Founded by the late Kuo Pao Kun, the independent arts centre has been the epicentre of the independent arts scene in Singapore. The Substation has worked with some distinguished names in the arts scene including Goh Boon Teck, Amanda Heng, Lee Wen and more.
By the end of August, The Substation will be led by a new team and a board of arts professionals from diverse backgrounds, including Wahyuni Hadi (co-producer of Ilo Ilo), filmmaker Kirsten Tan and local poet Cyril Wong. Raka Maitra will remain the Artistic Director while Serene Yap presumes the role of General Manager.
The decision to keep The Substation is a step in the right direction. Since its inception, The Substation has hosted various shows and events that bring the community together – most recently, SeptFest 2021, a farewell to the beloved independent contemporary arts centre.
