In the midst of an ongoing pandemic, the arts scene in Singapore has suffered blow after blow – with the displacement of independent arts organisations and major establishments like NTU CCA.
Three of the biggest names in the theatre industry – Pangdemonium, Singapore Repertory Theatre (SRT) and Wild Rice – join forces to announce a 20-minute short film. Titled The Pitch, the film raises the curtain on the three theatre companies as they struggle to make art – and get along with each other. Go behind the scenes through acclaimed film-maker Ken Kwek's subversive lenses and join three respected artistic directors Ivan Heng, Gaurav Kripalani and Adrian Pang as they navigate their way through these tumultuous times.
“This project is a demonstration of solidarity between our three companies,” says Pang, Co-Artistic Director of Pangdemonium in a press statement. “The Pitch may have its tongue firmly in cheek, but its heart reflects the resilience of our theatre community. If there’s one good thing that comes out of all this, it’s our shared determination to work together to keep engaging and inspiring people.”
2020 may be a mess, but we've seen many silver linings emerge from this whirlwind of a year. While this marks the first collaboration between all three theatre companies, we're hoping it won't be the last.
The Pitch premieres on YouTube on August 31 at 9pm, and available to watch for free. However, if you can afford it, do throw the three companies a line by making a donation of any amount.
