Some of the world's greatest landmarks have been lighting up with messages of hope to comfort us during this difficult time. The Eiffel Tower says 'merci' to frontline workers and reminds people to stay at home; the Empire State Building dazzles with a nightly light show while spotlighting interviews with first responders; and even our own Marina Bay Sands is flying the Singapore flag high with projections and a message of 'SG❤️' to keep us feeling united and strong.

The Matterhorn, a mountain in the Swiss Alps, has also been projecting its own message of hope and unity. Every night, it projects a different national flag on its facade, which stands 4,478m tall. India’s tricolour, Japan’s crimson sun and the US stars and stripes have all lit up the mountain, along with messages like ‘Stay at Home’ and ‘Hope’.

Last night, it was Singapore's turn and Switzerland Tourism's Facebook page accompanied the images with this message: "In the city-state Singapore, different ethnic groups live together peacefully. The country is well organised and clean: similar characteristics are attributed to Switzerland. We show solidarity with the people of Singapore and send a sign of hope," making for a moving and incredibly picturesque gesture.

The projections form part of a series of nightly light shows by artist Gerry Hofstetter above the mountain village of Zermatt. The next projection is still to be announced, and times vary, though they often start around 4.30am in Singapore. You can tune in to an official live webcam then if you happen to find yourself awake in the middle of the night.

In the meantime, here’s a selection of images from previous shows:
