You’ve probably seen countless viral videos of Taiwan’s famous Pingxi Sky Lantern Festival, and chances are, it’s somewhere on your travel bucket list. But what if we told you that you will soon be able to enjoy a similar ethereal experience right here in Singapore?

That’s right – the inaugural Singapore Sky Lantern Festival is happening this February 21, at Sentosa’s Palawan Green. Attendees will be able to pen their wishes on paper lanterns, light them up, and witness them soar into the night sky to form an enchanting tapestry of glowing orbs. Sounds like the perfect opportunity for lovebirds to recreate that magical scene from Disney's Tangled.

We know what some of you are probably thinking: flaming lanterns are a huge potential safety hazard, and not to mention, environmentally-unfriendly, as they'll only result in sea pollution once they drift back down.

Well, not to worry – the lanterns will actually be fastened to the ground with 60-metre long bamboo strings as they float in the sky for five to 10 minutes. Once the session is over, attendees are to retrieve their lanterns via the strings and dispose of them responsibly. Additionally, all the lanterns are made of oiled rice paper, which is biodegradable. There will strictly be no free release of lanterns.

As part of the event, there will also be an afternoon music festival with cultural performances, DJ sets, and food stalls. Night revellers can join in on the afterparty from 10pm to midnight.

The event is officially approved by the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF), Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS), together with Sentosa Development Corporation. Safety marshals will be on-site with fire extinguishers to tackle any mishaps.

Tickets are already on sale and cost $50 excluding booking fees, though students get to enjoy 50 percent off at $25. Each ticket comes with a pair of lanterns and a marker. Find out more and make your booking here.
