Every year Time Out rolls out its annual ranking of the world’s best cities based on the results of the Time Out Index survey. Pandemic or not, 37 cities made it on the 2021 list. The top three spots go to San Francisco, Amsterdam, and Manchester. Tokyo takes the best city in Asia at 10th place, Hong Kong follows behind at number 20, and Singapore sits at 24th position on the list! On top of that, 62 percent of respondents voted Singapore as the greenest city and zero percent listed us as a dirty city – making us the cleanest and greenest city in the world! Surprised?
The results are made possible thanks to 27,000 city-dwellers from all over the world who answered questions about city life, culture, dining and drinking, nightlife, relationships, community, and local neighbourhoods. With your insight, along with other local experts and Time Out editors around the world, the list recognises and celebrates all the things that make each city so great for living, visiting and the future.
We might be living in some strange times but the past year has seen more Singaporeans appreciative of their surroundings and green spaces so it's much deserving that we've picked up the 'cleanest and greenest' accolade. Over the year, we've seen you play tourist in our own city and picking up new and interesting hobbies like kayaking and longboarding. We've enjoyed sharing our hiking experiences, including exploring abandoned or hidden places and hope that it has encouraged our audiences to put on some good walking shoes and get out there. While 38 percent of the respondents called our city 'corporate', let's be honest – considering how small our island is, it's a pretty big flex to have both skyscrapers and tropical forests coexist together.
