You’ve heard of NOX Dine in the Dark, the popular dining experience that gives you a taste of what eating is like for the visually impaired. This year, the Muscular Dystrophy Association Singapore (MDAS), European restaurant Atout, and pharmaceutical company Roche are collaborating on a dinner experience spotlighting the challenges faced by individuals with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA).
Titled the Rare & Share Dinner Journey, the four-course dinner ($138) will include thoughtfully-designed dining elements like weighted spoons and syringes to realistically emulate the day to day experiences of SMA patients that are often overlooked.
Starting with the amuse bouche, diners will be served a green gazpacho to be taken with a syringe, alongside a choux pastry with cheese and smoked salmon, as well as crispy Iberico pork cheeks. The mix of textures reflect the ability of children with SMA to enjoy a variety of food during the early stages of the illness. The Foie Gras ‘Royale’ on the other hand, is a mushroom consomme with a softer consistency which caters to patients’ difficulty with swallowing as the illness progresses. Diners will also be given a weighted spoon to eat with, simulating the experience of one’s muscles weakening over time.
Apart from generating awareness and giving attendees a glimpse into the lives of SMA patients, the dinner will also raise funds for MDAS to support its caretaking efforts and resources.
The Rare & Share Dinner Journey is a month-long campaign which will take place across five sessions from February 29 to March 27. Reservations are now open. You can also make a donation to MDAS here.
