Over at family bakery Tiong Bahru Galicier Pastry, its old-school kueh and traditional bakes are a legacy of sorts. The store has been around since the 70s – making its way from Orchard to Serangoon, before setting up shop in its current premises at Tiong Bahru. To everyone’s dismay – mostly the loyal patrons of its nonya kueh – the store just recently announced that it’ll be closing down by mid-2022.
There isn’t a confirmed closing date but it’s likely to be by June or July. It’s a fourth-generation business, but it’s also unlikely that it will be opening a spin-off elsewhere. At the moment, there are a staggering nine people helping out at the store regularly – no surprises, since their kueh has long queues from morning to evening.
Tiong Bahru Galicier Pastry is best known for their traditional kueh: kueh dadar (rolled coconut crepes, $0.90), ondeh ondeh (coconut-filled pandan balls, $0.60), and kueh kosui ($0.80). If you’re thinking of popping by before they close, make sure to go in the early morning since they often sell out of kueh before 11.30am. Besides kueh, you might also find coconut tarts, orange chiffon cake, and crispy garlic bread too.
