The galactic gods are blessing us with a slew of celestial events – we’ve had Mars in opposition, the Geminid meteor shower, and the Orionid meteor shower happening in the past few months. Don’t pack up your telescopes or binoculars yet, as there’s another celestial event to catch. Known as the “planet parade”, this phenomenon happens when several planets are aligned in the sky and visible at the same time from Earth. This January, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune and Uranus are part of the planet parade.

When will the planet parade be visible in Singapore?

The planet parade is currently visible in our night skies till February 20, 2025. Although this means you have plenty of time to go planet chasing, given the recent rainy weather in Singapore, it’s best to look out for these planets when the sky is clear.

The occurrences of a planet parade aren’t consistent. It’s been predicted that the next “planet parade” will happen in late January 2036, when Mars, Saturn, Uranus, Jupiter, Neptune and Venus are be visible in the night sky.

Where is the best place to view the planet parade in Singapore?

There’s no need to scale mountains and climb hills to view the planet parade. This phenomenon should be easily visible anywhere in Singapore as long as the skies are clear.  Science Centre Singapore recommends open public areas such as Marina Barrage, East Coast Park, and the Southern Ridges for unblocked views of the planets with Singapore’s skyline in the background. Alternatively, the Science Centre Observatory is holding their public Stargazing and Digital Planetarium live shows on January 24 and 31 and Stargazer Experience on February 7 where the galactic affair should be visible. Tickets are priced at $17 for the former and $60 for the latter, and you can purchase tickets here.
