It’s no secret that the F&B scene in Singapore can be challenging to navigate, with intense competition and rising costs making it tough for even the most prestigious establishments to survive. In two months, we will bid farewell to another prized restaurant in our fine dining space.

After a successful four-year run, the one-Michelin-starred Sommer will be closing its doors on October 26. The 28-seater establishment is helmed by Chef Lewis Barker, who previously held stints in top restaurants like Bacchanalia and Vianney Massot.

Yesterday, Lim Kian Chun, the CEO of the Ebb & Flow Group which Sommer is part of, announced the restaurant’s closure, citing that “it’s time for a change”. He also assured diners that Chef Louis would remain with the group and that “there’s something exciting and different in the pipeline” –  perhaps hinting that a new restaurant is in the works.

Sommer opened its doors in January 2021, offering refined takes on mod-European fare with an emphasis on seasonal produce. Shortly after – nine months to be exact – it clinched its first Michelin Star and managed to retain it for the next three years under Barker’s watchful eye.

Some star dishes to have graced the menu over the years include oysters crowned with apple sorbet, pumpkin gnocchi balls tossed with smoked eel, and dry-aged duck seasoned with five-spice. The restaurant offers a three-course lunch discovery menu (from $108), a five-course inspiration menu (from $258), and a seven-course signature menu (from $298).

While it’s sad that we have to bid goodbye to Sommer, our food scene is far from dormant, with slews of new restaurants opening every month, and exciting joints like Le Pristine slated to launch this October as well.

Sommer will remain open till October 26 and you can make your reservations here
