In another major blow to Singapore's art scene the past few months, NTU Centre for Contemporary Art Singapore (NTU CCA) announced this week that it will cease operations at the Gillman Barracks arts complex as of March 2021. This follows a string of unfortunate circumstances experienced by independent arts organisations in Singapore as a result of the pandemic – including the displacement of the Intercultural Theatre Institute and nonprofits such as the Substation and the Necessary Stage.

NTUC CCA has found a home in Gillman Barracks since its inauguration in October 2013 as a national research centre of Nanyang Technological University, developed with support from the Economic Development Board, Singapore. Located alongside a cluster of international galleries, NTU CCA has positioned itself as a centre for critical discourse and experimental practices for Singapore, the region and beyond. It is the only non-state-run organisation of its scale, focusing on creating large exhibitions with international artists and curators. A recent example is The Posthuman City: Climates. Habitats. Environments, which features illustrious names from all over the world such as Irene Agrivina, Jae Rhim Lee, Ines Doujak, Hito Steyerl and more.

However, the organisation will not be closing completely and will be retaining its link to Nanyang Technological University – albeit without a physical space to operate from.
