When Singapore was in its 'circuit breaker' phase, various monuments around the city – from Marina Bay Sands to Gardens By The Bay – were lit up with projections to uplift our spirits. This time, National Gallery Singapore is planning to light up its facade in colour to celebrate Singapore's 55th birthday celebrations in August – and you be part of it.
The Gallery has just launched an Open Call, which invites locally-based visual artists to respond to the National Collection with a submission of an original 2D digital artwork for the rotating projection as part of Gallery Light Up. The collection, managed by the National Heritage Board, has roots that can be traced to the donation of over 110 artworks in 1960 by art philanthropist Dato Loke Wan Tho – and has borne witness to the changing landscape of art institutions in Singapore over the years.
Selected digital artworks from the open call will be projected onto the Padang Atrium Canopy of National Gallery Singapore, which will feature a rotating projection between July 24 to August 30. Artists who are notified of their selection will receive an honorarium of $500 per selection artwork. Interested artists should submit an application with a brief write-up on the choice of artwork from the National Collection that had inspired the submitted digital artwork. If you're unsure of how to proceed, the Gallery has released a Creative Brief to help you out. Do take note, however, that the deadline for submission is noon on July 20.
