It’s a great big galaxy, and we’re just specks of beings existing in it. For those who missed the Geminid meteor shower or the Perseids meteor shower last year, here’s your redemption – Mars in opposition (to Earth) will be happening this month. Here’s your guide on this galactic event, including where and how to view it.

What is Mars in opposition?

For the uninitiated, Mars in opposition happens when Earth, Mars and the Sun are perfectly aligned. Basically, it’s when Earth is sandwiched right between the Sun and Mars. During this phenomenon, Earth and Mars are at their closest possible distance, and the red planet will be completely illuminated by the Sun and visible to us humans on Earth. Mars in opposition occurs every two years, with the last opposition happening on December 8, 2022 and the next on February 17, 2027. Why two years, you may ask? That’s because Mars takes approximately two years to complete an orbit around the Sun.

When will Mars in opposition be visible in Singapore?

Mark your calendars and set your alarms as Mars in opposition will start becoming visible on January 16, 2025 around 7.30pm. The planet will be at its highest point at around 1am on January 17, 2025. That being said, the visibility also depends on the weather conditions.

If you aren’t planning to use special viewing equipment to spot the planet, take note that Mars will resemble a reddish star in the sky. But those who own a telescope should bust it out to best appreciate the details on the planet’s surface.

Where is the best place to view Mars in opposition in Singapore?

Similar to the previous meteor showers, this celestial affair should be visible all around Singapore. Open areas such as Marina Barrage, the Southern Ridges and East Coast Park are your best bet for getting unblocked and elevated views. You can also head to the Science Centre Observatory during the Stargazing and Digital Planetarium live show on January 17, 2025 to catch the red planet. Tickets are priced at $17 and you can purchase them here
