The doughnut hype is not dying down any time soon, not with Mister Donut launching its new matcha doughnuts, and this popular Australian chain serving Greek doughnuts setting up shop on Arab Street this week.
Lukumades started as a food truck in Melbourne specialising in deep-fried Greek doughnuts, also known as loukoumades. The bite-sized doughnut balls are known for their crunchy outer layer and soft, chewy texture on the inside. They are traditionally topped with honey and crushed walnuts, but Lukumades’ rendition involves coating these doughnut balls in generous amounts of sauce and toppings.
The doughnut balls are made fresh to order, and a half tray with five pieces starts at $8.50, while a whole tray with ten pieces starts at $12. There's also the option of getting the Half Half with ten pieces and two flavours ($15).
There are a total of 18 flavours to choose from, with the more popular ones being the pistachio and the Bueno – melted hazelnut sauce with milk chocolate and crushed biscuit. Fans of bombolonis or stuffed sourdough doughnuts will also be pleased to know that Lukumades has filled doughnuts too – the Bougatsa and Jam It come with cream custard and strawberry jam fillings respectively.
All of Lukumades’ doughnuts are vegan-friendly and vegan toppings are also available. Apart from doughnuts, Lukumades serves milkshakes, gelatos and coffee as well.
Lukumades is now open daily from 9am to 10pm from Sundays to Thursdays, and 9am to 12am on Fridays and Saturdays. Check out its Instagram Page for updates.
