The plan that required all EZ-link cards and Nets FlashPay cards to be upgraded with the SimplyGo system has been reversed. This u-turn will cost $40 million to materialise, according to the Transport Minister Chee Hong Tat.
But before this, let’s go back in time for the benefit of those who missed the entire SimplyGo saga.
The initial announcement – why switch to SimplyGo?
On January 9 2024, it was announced that our old EZ-link system would be upgraded to the new SimplyGo system on June 1. This new system, which was first launched in 2019, allows the convenience of topping up our cards through the SimplyGo app, eliminating the need for manual queues. It also has a more efficient mechanism for blocking lost cards.
Transitioning all commuters exclusively to SimplyGo will also save costs, as the operation of two systems (non-SimplyGo and SimplyGo systems) would involve higher expenses.
What went wrong?
However, within two weeks of its launch, the new system faced criticism that ultimately prompted a reconsideration of the implementation. Complaints included issues such as the system's incapability to display card balances and instant deductions, the extra need to download an app, especially for older folks who are not tech-savvy. Many also questioned why the change in system when the old one was working just fine.
Furthermore, SimplyGo cards are not accepted as a payment method for ERP and car park charges, resulting in more inconvenience. The announcement of this decision was also deemed ‘too sudden’, causing hassle for individuals who had recently replaced their expired EZ-link cards.
To add, several individuals that attempted to upgrade their EZ-link cards to the new SimplyGo system at machines also encountered difficulties.
Moving forward
The Land Transport Authority (LTA) will be extending the lifespan of our current EZ-link card system indefinitely. This will slow down the urgency to upgrade existing cards, as well as provide more time for them to troubleshoot the current system.
Commuters can now choose if they would like to continue using the current EZ-link / Nets FlashPay cards or their SimplyGo cards. Those who would like to revert back to the old system may exchange their cards for free between January 9 and 22. This applies to all including concession cardholders with a SimplyGo-compatible card, including seniors, students, Workfare Transport Concession cardholders, and people with disabilities.
Transport Minister Mr. Chee has stated that the Land Transport Authority (LTA) is committed to conducting further research to explore additional methods for enhancing features and improving the overall user experience for account-based ticketing cards.
I guess it appears that from now till then, we will just need to wait and see if the system improves, or not.
