Over a year ago on February 1, ex-Noma pastry chef Mohamed Al-Matin opened Le Matin’s very first flagship store at Ion Orchard. However, in a recent Instagram post, it has been announced that the famed pastry brand will be closing its ION store for good. Their last day will be on February 29, 2024.
The news came as a surprise to many, given the initial success of La Matin's launch and their subsequent recognition, including being named the Best Cake of 2023 by The Straits Times and receiving the highest accolade of three spoons in the Museum of Ice Cream's Sweet Spot Awards.
Thus far, the reason for closure remains undisclosed, but speculation suggests that significant rising costs, including rent and labour expenses, may have influenced this choice. Chef Matin and Le Matin Patisserie Team says, “This decision does not come lightly, but we believe it is necessary for us to reset, regroup, and explore new directions that will allow us to continue pushing the boundaries of culinary innovation and creativity.”
No commitments have been made regarding future developments from this point onward. However, the announcement concluded with a suggestion that La Matin's culinary journey is far from over, saying, “We will meet again soon with something new and exciting, À bientôt!”
