It’s time for Singapore’s much anticipated annual after-dark affair – yes we’re talking about i Light Singapore 2024 (iLSG 2024), returning for its 10th edition from May 31 to June 23, 2024. Organised by Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA), this year’s festival will light up more than just Marina Bay and its neighbouring precincts – it will also be activated in Tanjong Pagar for the very first time.
Undertaking the theme Cyclical Nature and inspired by the colour green, you would already be able to guess that this year’s edition will centre around sustainability. Visitors can anticipate a lineup of 17 interactive artworks that will explore the restoration, repurposing and re-designing of potential of everyday objects, by 25 different local and international artists.
Some of the highlights include Spin Me a Yarn – an installation that will be parked at the main festival grounds at Marina Bay Sands. Created by United Kingdom-based Studio Vertigo, the work will feature huge yarn balls intertwined with its surroundings, bringing to light how the usage of yarn in the fashion industry has significantly contributed to global pollution.
Just a walk away, at the Red Dot Design Museum, you’ll be able to find an installation titled Liminal;Minimal, materialised by students Benjamin Lim and Yeo Soon Yii over at Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD). The structure is built from repurposed materials from building sites, highlighting the issue of construction waste.
Moving past the Marina Bay district, iLSG is also set to illuminate Tanjong Pagar this year. At ‘Discover Tanjong Pagar Community Green’, immerse yourself in the interactive light installation, Kickit Team Tennis, created by Hungary-based artist collective Limelight. To play, simply gather two teams and try to kick the illuminated balls to send light paths across the field into each other’s territory. Don’t forget to look out for flora and fauna inflatables by Koros Design adorning the nearby trees.
South Beach will also return as one of the main festival grounds this year, alongside Millenia Walk. One of the artworks that can be found there is The Lantern by Josephine Pun Tsz Kiu from the National University of Singapore, where a luminous pavilion made from over 5,000 upcycled plastic bottles serves as a tangible reminder of the waste we generate. The interactive installation Lumi by art collection 65 Sqm @ Susa Space will also be located there, inviting visitors to sit on illuminated yoga balls wrapped in upcycled net fabric and move them around to play and interact with others.
In the spirit of sustainability, the upcoming iLSG will also be collaborating for the first time with sustainability lifestyle event The Conscious Festival to bring to us a series of wellness workshops, transformative talks, and bootcamp for conscious leadership, music performances and an outdoor marketplace.
GastroBeats will also be back with delicious grub and musical performances at the Bayfront Event Space. Similarly, following the goal of going green, there will be a wide range of sustainably-produced food items such as The Curry Club’s Mumbai Pav Bun made using mixed vegetables from organic farms and locally-sourced buns and 8 Degrees Taiwanese Bistro’s braised pork spring roll stuffed with locally-sourced tofu, black fungus, mushroom and egg.
Staying true to its theme, plastic straws will not be provided and visitors are encouraged to bring their own reusable cups, flasks and storage containers. And yes, even the toilets will boast air conditioning and solar-powered features.
The festival will run from 7.30pm to 11pm from Monday to Thursdays, and extended till 12 midnight on Fridays and Saturdays. General admission is free. Visit their webpage here for more information.
