It's nothing new to say that Singapore is expensive to live, work and play in. It consistently ranks as one of the priciest cities in the world (even for expats), something that's not helped by this year's GST hike. And soon, taking a cab from some of Singapore's best attractions will be more expensive.

On June 24, it was announced that the temporary taxi surcharges for trips from Changi and Mandai attractions will become permanent on July 1, 2024. Taxi operators ComfortDelGro, Trans-Cab, Prime, and Strides Premier will all be affected.

According to a Facebook post by ComfortDelGro Taxi, visitors travelling from Changi Airport, Changi Air Freight Centre, Airport Police Station, and Airport Logistics Park of Singapore will have to pay an additional $8 between 5pm and 11.59pm on Monday through Sunday. The surcharge is $6 at all other times.

Just spent a great day out at Singapore Zoo, River Safari, Night Safari or Bird Paradise? Expect to pay a $5 surcharge for taxi rides between 1pm and 11.59pm all seven days of the week. This is up from the $3 surcharge that was previously in effect.

This is not altogether a bad thing. ComfortDelGro's post stated that the surcharge hike "aims to increase the supply of taxis at underserved areas by incentivising drivers". Currently, drivers are reluctant to drive to these remote locations to pick up passengers, which can result in frustratingly long waiting times. For tourists and those who don't have a car, you're essentially paying a bit extra to get a taxi home faster and more conveniently.

But if you're (understandably) balking at the surcharge, then it's your sign to make alternative transport arrangements home.
