When we think of thematic bars in Singapore, a few distinctive places spring to mind: Atlas with its grand art deco interiors, Barbary Coast that’s decked out in floral wallpaper and chandeliers, and the seductive Here Kitty Kitty that’s fashioned after a Japanese vice den. The newest stunner joining this aesthetically-pleasing list is cocktail bar Dragonfly from Hong Kong, which has quietly flitted over to our shores in a less-frequented corner of Orchard Road.

Stepping into Dragonfly is almost akin to crossing a gateway into a magical dimension. Its unique, otherworldly concept is the brainchild of Ashley Sutton – the same design mastermind behind other ornate drinking establishments like Iron Fairies and The Mixing Room – and one can definitely see the mark of his signature style here. And very much like its sister bars, Dragonfly presents that 'gram factor in every corner.

Mirroring the original famed branch along Hong Kong’s Hollywood Road, Dragonfly Singapore also has that iconic gilded bar counter where a figure of a half dragonfly, half forest nymph-like creature stands in the middle, with majestic stained glass wings spread out to flank a shelf full of spirit bottles. Adding on to this dazzling display are shimmery mosaic floor tiles in hues of blue and green, along with wing-patterned glass lamps bathing the space in an ethereal blue hue.

Plush interiors aside, Dragonfly Singapore’s concoctions are also set to impress, with bartender Morgan Raelin Barron at the helm. After making a name for herself in America’s cocktail space, she eventually found herself in Singapore, where her portfolio includes well-loved bars like Jigger & Pony and 28 HongKong Street – both of which have found spots in the most recent world’s best bars list. She also had a hand in coming up with the cocktail spread at Brasserie Astoria.

The drinks menu is split into seven sections, each focused around a specific spirit category. Knock back classics as well as exclusive originals, and take your pick from light cocktails with lower ABV to bolder and stronger blends – it’s an inclusive range for both social drinkers and alcohol connoisseurs. Some potions to try include the gin-based Rose Stained ($25) with sakura vermouth and rosé, and the eau de vie-based Right Chance ($25), a heavy-hitter of cognac, port wine, beetroot, cacao, and oak.

There’s also a ‘high tea’ section, with tea-based cocktails served by the pot ($45) for sharing in shot-sized portions – basically an elevated tea party experience with added buzz.

Food-wise, the selection is lean but packed with all the comfort staples. Munch on light bites like crispy midwings ($12) and crispy honey prawn dumplings ($14), else have a heartier meal of truffle gnocchi ($20) with gorgonzola cream and porcini mushrooms, or a black Angus beef burger ($36) with bacon, garlic mayo, and a side of fries.

While refined, this enchanting space is meant to feel laid-back, so tipplers can groove to a rotation of live music acts crooning jazz and blues tunes, and even a series of DJ nights.

Dragonfly Singapore is located within Vibe Hotel Singapore Orchard (formerly The Elizabeth Hotel) at Mount Elizabeth – a quieter area of our shopping belt that's not too far away from the main action. Stay tuned for more updates via Dragonfly Singapore’s Instagram page.
