Safe to say that without Carl Linnaeus, we wouldn't have the term 'homo sapiens'. The 18th-century Swedish botanist is credited with inventing binomial nomenclature, the system of naming and grouping living organisms.
Now, you can get a glimpse into this scientist's life and work right here in Singapore at A Botanical Christmas with Carl Linnaeus, featuring a replica of Linnaeus' countryside estate of Hammarby at Gardens by the Bay’s Flower Dome. The experience runs from now until January 5, 2024 for the curious to get a glimpse into the botanist’s revolutionary works.
You’ll find his botanical specimens, journals, maps, scientific illustrations, and more in a detailed replica of his cosy cottage, complete with its iconic ‘falun red’ colour – named after the town of Falun. The red is also a signature shade of Sweden’s wooden cottages, barns, and houses.
Even the plants from his garden in Hammarby are replicated and, as one would expect of a renowned botanist, includes a mix of dazzling exotic flora. Look forward to a picturesque landscape of delphiniums, geraniums, and salvias, carefully cultivated to transport you to Linnaeus’ 18th-century cottage.
But that’s not all there is to see – be there on December 14 and 15 because Santa’s coming to town for special festive photos with all. Find out more here and check out this list of the best Christmas events in the city.
