Day one of the most anticipated concerts of 2024 just concluded yesterday and we were among the 60,000 people lucky enough to be there in the flesh. Yes, we’re referring to Coldplay’s Music of the Spheres Tour at the Singapore National Stadium.
The venue was swamped with people even hours before the actual show time. And needless to say, the queues at the merchandise booths were also relentless.
Before the big C graced the stage, Indonesian singer Jinan Laetita and Singaporean talent Jasmine Sokko took turns to ease us into the epic night of music. During the pauses in between the opening acts, animated videos were broadcasted to encourage the audience to go green by generating electricity through riding the kinetic bikes and jumping on the kinetic dance floors. This is all part of the band’s effort to ensure the Music of the Spheres Tour is as environmentally friendly as possible. How much sweeter can they get?
Before we knew it, Chris Martin and band came on stage and immediately commanded the air with Higher Power. The ‘enhanced experience’ wristbands lit the stadium up in a flash – a breathtaking sight that cellphones will not be able to do justice to. Coldplay truly defined the phrase ‘starting off with a bang’ as well – with confetti and bouncy balls being launched right right at the start of the show.
No time was wasted, and they continued to deliver mesmerising acts, both musically and visually, one after another. The crowd sang their hearts out, especially during nostalgic tracks like Paradise, Viva La Vida, The Scientist, and one that launched them to stardom in the year 2000, Yellow.
Midway through, Chris stopped for a ‘sign reading’ session. He went through the signs held by fans in the standing pit, scanning and reading them aloud. Eventually, he paused at one asking for the dedication of the song Everglow to the fan's late father. They were invited on stage and of course, Chris fulfilled their wishes and gifted us an intimate and heartwarming three minutes (sniffles).
The wholesome moments continue without end: Chris Martin proudly raises the rainbow LGBTQ+ flag up high during the song People of the Pride, as he sings “We’ll all be free to fall in love.”
During the track Sky Full Of Stars, the crowd was requested to switch off their phones and fully immerse themselves in the moment and nearly everyone complied. Towards the end, the band shifted over to the back of the standing pit for the last few songs, and eventually ended the night with Fix You, leaving the audiences' hearts warm and full. In that very moment, Coldplay guided us home and ignited our bones, making it a night to remember.
