Brunch buffets, seafood buffets, international buffets – they’re all great. But when was the last time you heard of a dessert buffet? And no, we’re not talking about the token dessert stations you’d find at a regular hotel buffet spread. Instead, picture fresh cream, seasonal fruits flown in from Japan, and a daily rotating selection of sweet treats. That’s what you can expect at Chateraise’s very first dessert buffet in Singapore.

What it is

Last month, the popular patisserie introduced its dessert buffet concept in celebration of its 70th anniversary and opening of its 1000th store. This all-you-can-eat experience is currently only available at Chateraise Premium Yatsudoki at Millenia Walk. The buffet was originally priced at $20 per adult but has since raised its prices as of September 1 to $25 per adult, $15 for kids under 15, and $10 for those under five.

For 90 minutes, you can help yourself to as many servings of desserts as you can stomach. Inclusive in the buffet price is also a choice of one drink ranging from coffee, to matcha, houjicha, and a white peach smoothie.

How it works

First, proceed to the buffet counter to make your payment and choose your beverage. Then, place your dessert order directly over the counter. Choose from a bevvy of sweet treats in the chiller, stocked with everything from fresh cream fruit cakes to baumkuchen, bon bon macarons, pudding, crêpe cakes, and more. When you’ve finished eating, return your trays to the designated tray-return area.

What to try

While the dessert selection varies daily, these are some sweet treats to be on the lookout for. Try the baumkuchen, strawberry cream Mont Blanc, and the adorable bon bon macarons – our favourite among the different flavours was the pink Rouge macaron. Another unique item available during our visit was sakura-flavoured rusk, a type of bread biscuit best enjoyed with tea. Make sure to also order the premium fermented butter soft serve ice cream, topped off with fresh fruits.

We were also in time to try the limited-edition cantaloupe cake, featuring fresh cantaloupes from Japan that are in season this summer. From September 5 onwards, Chateraise will refresh its seasonal collection to focus on Kyoho grape desserts.

The verdict

If you’re a big dessert buff, the eye-popping array of confectionery is sure to impress, especially since exclusive seasonal treats and signature items are included in the curation. But admittedly, there’s only so much sugar a person can stomach in a span of 90 minutes – we were pretty much reaching the point of satiation by our fourth cake. Plus, to break it down, the average price of a Chateraise cake slice is about $5, so you’ll be looking at having five or more cakes to make your money’s worth. Perhaps all that sugar would have been made more manageable if drinks were free-flow as well.

Nevertheless, we imagine the experience makes for a fun challenge to do with friends, a unique birthday surprise for someone you know with a sweet tooth, or perhaps a once-in-a-lifetime kind of indulgence to treat yourself to – if you’re ready to handle the sugar high afterwards, that is.

Chateraise Premium Yatsudoki’s Daily Sweets Buffet is available daily from 1.30pm to 9.30pm, with last orders taken at 8pm. Reservations for the buffet are required after 7pm. The outlet is located at 01-93, Millenia Walk, Singapore 039596.
