Whether you’re a constellation connoisseur or someone who simply enjoys a bit of planet gazing, get ready for a galactic treat this April: the arrival of the first full moon of astronomical spring. Dubbed the Pink Moon, this celestial event is one you won’t want to miss. Read on for all the details about this lunar phenomenon.
What is the Pink Moon?
First things first – the Pink Moon isn’t actually pink. Also known as April’s full moon, it occurs when the Earth aligns perfectly between the moon and the sun, lighting up the moon’s face in full for us Earth-dwellers to admire.
The name comes from the phlox subulata – a type of North American wildflower that blooms vibrantly pink around this time of year. The plant is also known as the creeping phlox, moss pink, or moss phlox.
When will the Pink Moon be visible in Singapore?
The Pink Moon will grace our skies from April 12 to 13, 2025, with peak visibility expected on the night of April 13. Unlike February’s planet parade, this is a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it kind of moment, so be sure to plan where and when you’d like to do your moon-spotting.
Where is the best place to view the Pink Moon in Singapore?
Your best bet is an open area away from the city’s bright lights and tall buildings. Some popular stargazing locations to consider include Changi Beach Park, Labrador Nature Reserve, Marina Barrage, and East Coast Park.
Of course, clear skies are key. With Singapore’s recent rainy weather this early April, here’s hoping the clouds take a break when the Pink Moon makes its appearance.
