Try delectable pastries from around the world by local home bakers at this Orchard Central café

Baker X, the baking studio and café at Orchard Central, launches Around the World in Bakes and Sweets for the second half of 2024. This new pastry line-up follows the theme of travel and will showcase speciality bakes by four home bakers from this June to next February, namely Love for Wagashi, Pastry Haven by Helen, Pastories, and Cassia Canelés. 

This is part of Baker X’s initiative to help passionate home-based bakers who are looking to scale up their businesses and break into the retail environment. Since 2021, Baker X has brought in more than 30 bakers, providing them with a baking studio and café space to sell their confectionery. Some have successfully started their own shops, such as Connect Café by Ree and Mummy at Katong V mall.

Around the World in Bakes and Sweets begins with Love for Wagashi by Dionne Ho. From now till August 18, Dionne will be offering nerikiri wagashi (from $7), a type of delicate traditional Japanese confection that comes in shapes like hydrangeas and sunflowers, with signature fillings like white bean paste, azuki, yuzu and matcha. Other highlights include the crowd-favourite daifuku (from $5), dango ($5.80), and the new hakoniwa (from $12) which translates to ‘miniature garden in a box’. There’s also a signature raindrop cake ($6) available exclusively for dine-in at Baker X. 

Following Love for Wagashi, Pastry Haven by Helen will be up next, with its classic European treats like cinnamon rolls, financiers, madeleines and focaccia retailing from August 20 to October 13. From November 1 to December 9, Pastories will be offering traditional Chinese pastries and local heritage delights like wife cakes, egg tarts, almond sesame marble cakes and more. And lastly, Cassia Canelés will round up Around the World in Bakes and Sweets with its canelés – a type of Bordeaux pastry – which comes in 50 different flavours. These will be available from December 11 to February 5 next year.
