We may not have enough tricks up our sleeves in 2020, but astrophiles are in for a real treat this Halloween. There'll be not just one, but two full moons gracing our night skies this October. After the 'Full Harvest Moon' on October 1, comes the rare 'Hunter's Blue Moon' on October 31.

All Hallows' Eve may conjure up terrifying images of werewolves, zombies, and monsters crawling from the depths of hell under a spooky full moon – but how often do you get a full moon on Halloween? It’s a rare occurrence, actually. A full moon gracing the night sky on Halloween happens roughly once every 19 years (a pattern known as the Metonic Cycle). Well, that gives a new meaning to the phrase “once in a blue moon”.

The next Halloween full moon can be seen in 2039, 2058, 2077 and 2096.

What is a ‘Blue Moon’?

The upcoming full moon may be called the Hunter’s Blue Moon, but don’t be mistaken – you won’t see la luna in a blue hue this month. For more than half a century, whenever two full moons appear in a single month, the second one is called a “blue moon”.

Where to observe the Hunter’s Blue Moon?

Halloween’s full moon can be seen across Singapore. Granted, if the skies are clear. Head on to any open-air field with unblocked views of the night sky, or head to these best places to stargaze in Singapore. Plan a date night at Singapore Botanic Gardens or gather some friends and have a night picnic at Changi Beach Park.
