It's never too early to expose your little ones to the arts, including one that schools them on the ocean. From now until July 13, gather the kids for a trip to the Singapore Maritime Gallery where its Changing Gallery turns into a labyrinth of kaleidoscopic corners, featuring larger-than-life artworks, animations and installations.
Designed by the artsy educational platform Eyeyah! and commissioned by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore, the free multimedia exhibition is a visually stimulating and thought-provoking experience that aims to spark curiosity in kids about the world around them, including the deep blue sea.
Get ready to be transported to a busy dockyard the moment you step into the gallery, where marine-related professions are introduced through a Where’s Wally-inspired game. Then navigate through the works of 30 artists and illustrators from 13 countries, and celebrate the wonders of travellers and explorers, as well as ships and cargoes. But it's not all good and dandy – the exhibition also highlights hard truths, including the threats to the ocean and marine life.
The exhibition also spotlights a special section dedicated to 23 artworks by artists from Pathlight School's Artist Development Programme, an aquatic cinema screening ocean-themed animations, and a series of postcards superimposed with graphics that explore myths and superstitions. For an Instagram moment, check out the rubber duck installation and the Shark Café which are playful reimaginations of real events that take place in the Pacific Ocean.
To fuel up the fun, Eyeyah! is giving away a complimentary copy of the Sea issue (worth $10) for every completed activity book. The complimentary activity booklet is designed to stimulate curiosity and invite the kids to find clues and answers to puzzles and quizzes hidden within the exhibition.
