UPDATE, February 13: Amidst the novel coronavirus, this event has been cancelled. According to a statement by Esplanade, The Asian Tour by Hamburg Ballet John Neumeier, which comprises performances in Singapore and Macao from February to March, is cancelled due to the evolving COVID-19 situation. John Neumeier and the company sends their deepest regrets and looks forward to coming back to Asia another time.

October 29, 2019: After 17 years, The Hamburg Ballet makes its long-awaited return with the Singapore premiere of Lady of the Camellias for three days only from February 21 to 23. The ballet is directed by John Neumeier himself, Artistic Director and Chief Choreographer of the Hamburg Ballet.

This marks the first time the ballet is performed in Singapore. Lauded as one of his best works since its premiere in 1978, the adaptation of Dumas's tragedy is famous for its brilliant choreography and detailed portrayal of the characters' psychology. The unconventional narrative ballet follows the tragic life of Marguerite, a beautiful courtesan secretly suffering from tuberculosis. Her life takes a turn when she falls in love with Armand Duval, a young man from a well-to-do family. Confronted by Armand's father, she decides to leave her beau, and eventually dies of her illness.

Lady of the Camellias is one of Neumeier's most beloved and dramatic works and features some of the most stunning pas de deux in 20th-century ballet. The ballet is set to the romantic music of Frederic Chopin, and features elaborate costumes by Jürgen Rose. Since its debut in 1978, it has entered the repertory of companies such as Stuttgart Ballet, Paris Opera Ballet, Bolshoi Ballet, and the American Ballet Theatre.

Don't miss your chance to watch this legendary John Neumeier ballet work performed by the Hamburg Ballet, which has been under the helm of Neumeier himself since 1973. Book your tickets now.
