It’s not the city’s smartest bar, and definitely not the coolest. But where the Lizard scores low on hip quotient, its genuinely lovely waitstaff goes to great lengths to foster a family atmosphere, and succeeds. Large screens carry sporting action, but are positioned discreetly so conversation flows as freely as the draft Euro beers (Leffe Blonde, Hoegaarden) and San Miguel. A chillout area and stash of magazines towards the rear makes a comfortable retreat for leisurely (or lazy) lounge lizards; meanwhile pinball machines and a pool table keep restless types occupied. But what really stands out aside from the earthy, genial ambience is the menu. Though this seems an unlikely destination for gastropub gourmets, the bar food isn’t just unfeasibly cheap but of excellent quality.
