Give me dim sum or give me death – eggs Benedict is not my idea of a good brunch. Yes, I’m not the biggest fan of cafés, and I’m not afraid to say it. Which is probably why, in the lead up to this issue on the best cafés in Singapore, I passed on the opportunity to hop around the dozens of hipster-attracting, hollandaise-hankering, Edison bulb-exploiting joints in the city. Instead, the entire editorial team had the ignominious task of doing just that.
And, boy, what a job they did. From Tiong Bahru mainstays to CBD caffeine Meccas to heartland ice cream parlours, they went, they ate and they damn well conquered. Now, if only someone would open a Cantonese restaurant in an erstwhile hardware store that also does great coffee.
Of course, no café list would be complete without a roundup of the best Instagrammable spots. We share the most good-looking cafés in town and share some tips and tricks to create your own Insta-worthy food photography. Flatlays, included.
And if you've ever wondered what makes a good cuppa, The New Black's director of coffee, Bronwen Serna, lets us in on what to look out for in the beverage and the best places to hit up for a cup or two.
Also in this month's issue, we delve into body art and sat down with a couple of Singaporean tattoo artists to talk about their career and different art styles. So if you're planning to get either a simple design or an intricate art piece, get inked by these sought-after needle experts.
