It’s impossible to stroll down Marina Bay without the iconic lotus-shaped structure of ArtScience Museum catching your eye from a distance. But this museum is more than just a pretty face – it’s a portal to mind-bending exhibitions where art, science, and technology collide in the most imaginative ways. The architectural marvel has spotlighted a variety of exhibitions from deep dives of the world around us to the lives of world-famous artists. And to kickstart the new year, it’s bringing three of its must-see exhibitions to the forefront.

Future World: Where Art Meets Science

Permanent exhibition, with a refresh in January 2025

ArtScience Museum’s permanent exhibition Future World has long been a crowd favourite, and for good reason. A joint collaboration with the international art collective teamLab, this immersive exhibition is a feast for the senses – think interactive installations, ethereal soundscapes, and playful experiences.

And just like your annual "new year, new me" resolution, it’s getting a glow-up in January with fresh installations never before seen in Singapore. While the specifics are still under wraps, the updated exhibition promises an even deeper dive into the fascinating relationship between art and technology. If they’re anything like the past installations, you can expect them to be as mesmerising. They’ll make your Instagram feed pop too. Find out more here.

The World of Studio Ghibli

Until February 2, 2025

This one’s for fans of Studio Ghibli and anyone who has ever been enchanted by the magic of animated storytelling. For the first time in Singapore, this spellbinding exhibition spans two storeys, taking you to the fantastical worlds created by the Japanese animation studio.

Stroll through large-scale theatrical recreations of iconic scenes from 11 beloved films, including My Neighbour Totoro, Spirited Away, and Princess Mononoke. Each set piece is intricately hand-painted, making you feel like you’ve stepped straight into a Studio Ghibli masterpiece. Stand under the rain with Totoro and Mei, snap a selfie with No Face on a train, visit Howl’s moving castle, and more.

The experience is complemented by 16 smaller box art installations, acting as tiny portals that let you zoom into different scenes from the films. And since no Studio Ghibli film is complete without its whimsical original soundtracks, you can expect to hear classic theme songs wafting through the various sets, adding an extra layer of enchantment to your visit. Altered States: Experiments in Moving Image

Until February 2, 2025

Step out of your comfort zone and view the world through a different lens with this captivating experimental exhibition. Altered States: Experiments in Moving Image showcases works of international and local artists that push the boundaries of film as an art form, exploring material interventions and unconventional storytelling – think using everyday materials, cameraless photography, and ecological processes.

Highlights include Liquid Solid by Nicky Assmann and Joris Strijbos, where freezing soap transforms into mesmerising fractal patterns, and Fallen Candles – Triplet by Youki Hirakawa, a poignant meditation on time and renewal inspired by the Fukushima disaster. Altered States is a must-see for the incurably curious, whether you're a cinephile or simply fascinated by innovative art. Find out more here.

Whether you’re exploring the refreshed wonders of Future World, stepping into the scenes of Studio Ghibli, or challenging your perceptions at Altered States, make some space in your January schedule to check out all three unique experiences under one roof before it’s too late. Pro tip: ArtScience Museum recently launched ArtScience After Hours, a newly extended hours offering, so that you can explore the museum till 9pm on Fridays and Saturdays.
