Indie record store Straits Records have set up shop (temporarily) at The Substation to kick off the 'Front of House' programme. An initiative to boost local businesses, music and artists, it will see various local independent retail initiatives operate a bi-monthly pop-up store out of The Substation's Box Office.
For those who need an introduction, Straits Records is a legendary name in Singapore's music scene, championing regional and local music since it was established in 1995. After moving out of its brick and mortar store along Bali Lane, the record store has been operating out of owner Ridhwan Ghany's home. But Straits Records is back temporarily this time. For three months only at The Substation, let nostalgia kick in and visit the alternative record company at its pop up. Head on down to flip through vintage vinyl and iconic CDs while sipping on a cuppa to support your friendly local business and favourite music bands.
The Substation's 'Front of House' programme is supported by 'Proposals for Novel Ways of Being', a joint initiative by National Gallery Singapore and Singapore Art Museum. The initiative sees 12 art spaces across Singapore – from The Substation to Coda Culture and NTU Centre For Contemporary Art Singapore – join forces to present exhibitions and programmes that imagine new ways of living in a world changed by the Covid-19 pandemic.
