Fair warning: you might or might not appreciate Rully Shabara’s frenetic shrieks, guttural chants and trance-like falsettos – but he’s one half of Senyawa, and together with instrumentalist Wukir Suryadi, they taint black metal with a Javanese touch. Folklore melds with garage guitar distortion to produce a riotous, genre-defying performance, thanks in part to Suryadi’s self-made bamboo wukir – a stringed bamboo spear crafted from animal skins and fishing lines – that mimics a tabla, sitar and chainsaw all at once. You have been warned.
