Domestic helpers are depicted as masked forms in Jose Tence Ruiz’s monochromatic canvases. They perform everyday chores – doing the laundry, cleaning the toilet, sweeping the floor – but are always alienated from the environment in which they work. The Filipino artist uses this figure of the Other to reveal out the hidden forces behind the global labour economy and how these domestic helpers have become the unwitting pawns of late capitalism.
