We can usually get through the days with cafe hopping and a good meal, but what makes our night has got to be a tipple or two. Thankfully for us, Seoul’s bar scene is a vibrant and eclectic mix of traditional Korean taverns and modern cocktail bars. Whether you're in the mood for a rustic atmosphere with traditional drinks and snacks, or a night of dancing to the beats of a live DJ, Seoul's bars have something for everyone. Here, take a swig in some of the best bars the city has to offer, each one more outstanding than the next.

Seoul's Best Bars

Damotori Hieut is a cosy bar popular for its wide selection of Korean traditional liquors like makgeolli, along with its rustic atmosphere. The makgeolli menu is organised according to regions in Korea, but if you’re unsure of what to order, don’t fret. You can customise your order by getting a recommendation of makgeolli selections (of five glasses) to try before settling on a bottle.

Munhak Salon is located in the sleepy Hapjeong neighbourhood, just below a discrete set of stairs. The literary-themed bar – perfect for book lovers – is home to a neat menu of delicious cocktails named after Korean literary works. It’s a great place for a solo drink with a book in hand by the counter, or a quiet evening with friends over a charcuterie board or two.

Craft beer lovers, here’s one for you. Nestled in a traditional Korean house, Seoul Gypsy is an independent brewery with plenty of booze on tap for you to try out. Our current favourite is the Fire Flower, a fruity, aromatic number infused with juicy mango and guava that’s sure to charm any customer.

For a fun night out with your friends, we highly recommend heading to Six Night. The upscale bar is known for its cocktails and chic atmosphere. The large basement bar is decked with plush seating and high tables, complete with a DJ playlist of English pop hits and classics you can sing along to.

Hang 2pm8pm’s casual atmosphere cements its reputation as a popular spot for those around the Euljiro neighbourhood. While there are other types of alcohol available here, most locals come to Hang 2pm8pm for the wine – you’ll get glasses with markers that you can decorate for yourselves as you sip on vino, making it a great Instagrammable moment too.

For an upgraded experience with traditional Korean liquor, Ddaro zip is your best bet. The space is generally modern in design, save for Korean-style window screens that you’d usually see in old hanoks. To go along with your drinks, expect a mix of dishes like beef tartare and Tteokbokki, although we have to say the garlic chives pancake is one of our favourite orders here.

Those who are looking to spend a riot of a night – the classy way, of course – should make a stop at Get All Right Cheongdam. The trendy bar is known for its cocktails and the lively atmosphere. Think hip hop stages and charming live bands as well as Latin dance performances throughout the night. The performance schedule changes regularly, so be sure to check out their Instagram for updates.

After spending your time shopping in Myeongdong, why not hit up a bar nearby? Walk up a flight of stairs before entering Ghiwon22, a classy locale known for its menu of cocktails made with traditional alcohol. We particularly enjoyed the creamy matcha and chocolate made with Andong soju. Fret not if you’re not one to try something different – they have a neat selection of classic cocktails and spirits as well.
