Between 1892 and 1927 almost 16 million people came to Ellis Island attempting to immigrate to the United States. For the 280,000 who were turned back, Ellis Island became the “Isle of Tears.” The film blends documentary, experimental, fiction, and dance modes in what Monk describes as “a mosaic of sounds and images woven together into formal musical design.” (1981, 28 min, digital)

Screened in conjunction with the performance, Meredith Monk & Vocal Ensemble: On Behalf of Nature: https://www.facebook.com/events/787550274671923/
