Lines start forming down the block at 4:30pm for Bar Crudo’s daily happy hour (5pm to 6:30pm), which promises high-end, sustainably sourced seafood at a third of the price. The buttery, flaky rock cod tacos come piled with salsa, guac, pickled onions and cotija cheese, and the seafood chowder—which incorporates fish, mussels, squid, shrimp, potatoes, bacon, and cream—is decadently rich. And though you can find $1 oyster deals throughout the city, this raw bar caters to those with discerning tastes. The oysters and shellfish are sourced locally from NorCal and Washington, including herb and jalapeno marinated mussels, littleneck clams, and gulf prawns. The crudo sampler is a work of art, featuring beautifully plated bites of arctic char (with horseradish creme fraiche and dill), scallop (with picked corn, chili, and chive blossom), tombo tuna (with citrus, chili, and yuzu), and butterfish (with chorizo oil and espelette pepper). While you could make a meal out of the raw bar, larger entrees include a whole branzino and a roasted crab.
