As far as free things go, a box of healthy fruits and vegetables is a total win—but combine it with a day of thrifting and you’ll be feeling like you’re cleaning up your carbon footprint. On Saturday, August 17, Flashfood—an app for discounted groceries and produce—will be giving away more than 100 boxes of free, perfectly ripe produce, while supplies last.

It’s part of the first-ever Food Thrifting Market held at Empress Vintage, an upscale vintage clothing and jewelry shop in the Mission (right now, the shop’s homepage is featuring a Prada crop top for $425 and a Jean Paul Gaultier Soleil tank top dress for $228). Empress, which some of you may remember from its Berkeley location on Alcatraz Avenue a few years ago, also offers styling services and tarot reading.

Along with the chance to build your own produce box with free food from Flashfood and Lucky Supermarkets, you can shop the racks at Empress and purchase fresh stems for bouquet building from floral design studio Flower Friends SF. There will be a live DJ and free drinks (coffee, lemonade and other beverages). The produce will be outside on tables displayed like a farmers’ market for people to pick what they put inside their own box.

It’s important to emphasize that the produce boxes are free while supplies last. Flashfood plans to give away about 100 boxes between the hours of 11am to 2pm. So maybe try for the early side? RSVP here.
