The Greek-style amphitheater in McLaren Park is a jewel in the San Francisco Parks and Recreation portfolio of public performance spaces. With capacity for amplified sound and a legit green room, it is an ideal venue for an array of theatrical and music performances. The theater is actually nearly 50 years old. However, in 2004 the community rallied for a name change to honor the Excelsior district’s native son, Grateful Dead frontman Jerry Garcia, whose childhood home is a short walk from the park.
