Close to one of San Francisco's prettiest urban parks, in a quiet part of North Beach, this is a convivial little inn, beautifully decorated with large gilt mirrors, pots of exotic orchids and lots of character. Each of the smallish rooms is furnished with antiques and luxurious fabrics, and the modern touch of free wireless internet access. A couple of rooms' private baths are across the hall. The service is excellent: guests are provided with tea, wine and hors d'oeuvres every afternoon. The rates also include a decent continental breakfast, though it's a foolish soul who forgoes getting in line early for the outstanding breakfasts served at Mama's across the square.
