It's something of a mystery as to why American hotels continue to describe themselves as 'European-style'; seasoned travellers are aware that, in Europe itself, that often means creaky bedsprings, rude staff and a toilet several miles down the corridor. Still, this handsome old Queen Anne structure, formerly the opulent Sultan Turkish Baths, isn't on that particular radar. Guest rooms are well kept, if hardly stylish; the public spaces are considerably more charming; and Fino, the hotel's restaurant, is a decent spot. The main drawback: walls are on the thin side - but that's true of many vintage buildings.
